Definitions of Numeracy Based on Current Research

To be numerate is to have and be able to use appropriate mathematical knowledge, understanding, skills, intuition and experience whenever they are needed in everyday life. Numeracy is more than just being able to manipulate numbers. As students become increasingly numerate, they should develop more confidence and therefore feel more comfortable when they confront the mathematical demands of everyday life.
