Announcing ACE Online
ACADEMIC AND CAREER ENTRANCE PROGRAM FOR DISTANCE DELIVERY
WELCOME TO AN IMPORTANT NEW DELIVERY INITIATIVE
The College Sector Committee for Adult Upgrading (CSC) is pleased to announce that the Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) courses are now ready for distance delivery by colleges in English and French across the province.
We hope that the following narrative answers any questions you might have about ACE On Line.
If you have additional questions, please contact Lynne Wallace at l.wallace@xplornet.com or Arlene Cronin at arlethos@cogeco.ca
WHAT IS ACE?
The Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) program received system wide approval for delivery by colleges from MTCU in 2004. It is not a new program. It is the renaming and updating of the Basic Training for Skills Development Level 4 (BTSD 4) delivered by all colleges since 1964.
ACE is a non postsecondary program designed to prepare students to succeed in postsecondary and apprenticeship training. It is accepted as OSSD equivalent by Colleges and Apprenticeship for purposes of admission. The Ministry of Education has recently released a report comparing ACE courses to college-stream OSSD courses which concludes the courses are highly comparable. The ACE Certificate is also recognized as OSSD Equivalent by a growing number of employers for hiring and promoting staff. Major employers include the following: VALE INCO, General Motors, OPP, Hydro One, Proctor and Gamble, as well as various Municipalities and Regional Hospitals.
There are 10 ACE courses available in both English and French. The courses are Communications (French and English), Core Mathematics, Apprenticeship Mathematics, Business Mathematics, Technology Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Fundamentals, and Self Management/Self Direction. There is one additional course designed for Francophone students – English as a Second Language.
Many students only participate in the courses they need to meet the prerequisites for admission to further education. All students can also qualify to receive an ACE Certificate by successfully completing a communications course, one math course and any two other courses.
WHAT IS THE REGISTRATION PROCESS?
Registration for ACE Online courses takes place through the Distance Education department of your local college. If the college in your area is not yet offering ACE Online, other colleges in your region can register students.
There is no charge for books or tuition.
Students may begin their studies the first week of each month through to March 2010.
All students must successfully complete an initial 30 hour orientation course designed to help prospective distance students determine if they have the necessary, computer, academic and personal attributes to succeed in on line learning. The teacher responsible for this course will provide ongoing support to ACE on-line learners. The Orientation course helps each student develop an Individualized Training Plan which is continuously updated to reflect student progress.
All that is required of students is that they have reliable access to a computer and the Internet. Students will receive a transcript from the registering college when they have successfully complete the course.
WHAT SUPPORTS DO ACE ON-LINE STUDENTS RECEIVE?
There is Technical Support available to all students 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Academic Support is provided by the on-line teachers.
Personal Support is provided by the on-line counselor who teaches the orientation course.
